According to Lina Esco, filming intimate moments with Ben Affleck on The Rip was anything but tense, as the pair frequently broke into laughter. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the film’s New York premiere, the 40-year-old said the light mood came naturally, crediting Affleck’s warmth and the relaxed atmosphere on set.
“We were giggling. We were just two dorks, dorking around,” she said.
In The Rip, Esco appears as Captain Jackie Velez, whose murder sets off a tense investigation. Ben Affleck stars as Sergeant JD Byrne alongside Matt Damon’s Lieutenant Dane Dumars.
The film also stars Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, Néstor Carbonell, and, fresh off a Golden Globes victory, Teyana Taylor. Per Lina Esco’s PEOPLE interview, she felt a connection to the movie the moment she read the script.
The actress wanted nothing more than to join The Rip after being offered the role, and her love for the project has only grown since then.

She admitted the audition process took several tryouts, but everything clicked during a Zoom call with director Joe Carnahan. Esco added that being invited on the film’s journey felt surreal, and watching the first cut later confirmed her instincts, as she called the movie genuinely powerful.
