The man behind Chandler could make almost anyone laugh. But behind all the laughter was an actor fighting battles the world rarely got to see. Friends fans knew Chandler's jokes were often a defense mechanism. But what they may not have known was that Matthew Perry understood that instinct way beyond the confines of a mere sitcom script. Netflix’s new documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, explores this lesser-known side of the actor’s life through the eyes of those who knew him before the world did.

5 revelations from this documentary take us beyond Perry’s sarcastic on-screen persona.

Friends Season 1 writer Jeff Straus revealed in the first episode of The One About Matthew Perry just how closely Perry resembled his character, Chandler Bing.

“Matthew’s relationship to that character was pretty strong, for all the good reasons. There was this overwhelming pool of invisible vulnerability in both Matthew and the character.”

Perry himself also spoke about the instant familiarity he felt with Chandler upon reading the script. In an audio interview featured in the documentary, the actor recalled recognizing something of himself in the role, particularly the impulse to use humor to hide his misery.

"It was about a guy who was sort of trying to distract everybody from how miserable he was all the time by being funny,” Perry stated.

The makers also drew inspiration from Perry’s real-life awkwardness around women he found attractive. Straus referenced The One with the Blackout episode, in which Chandler gets trapped in an ATM vestibule with model Jill Goodacre during a citywide power outage. Apparently, Chandler's flustered reactions throughout the episode and running inner monologue, as Straus suggested, drew heavily from Perry’s own awkward nature.

Matthew Perry’s battle with addiction began with painkillers

It was during the filming of Fools Rush In that Matthew Perry was prescribed Vicodin, an opioid painkiller, to treat his injuries. As he would later reveal, the first pill produced a sort of instant chemical reaction that made its effects feel like far more than simple pain relief.

"I had no idea what was going on. The doctor gave me a pill in a package and said, 'Take this when you’re done shooting.' I did, and then I felt this incredible euphoria. So why wouldn't I take more?"

Within months of his injury, Perry had developed a severe dependence on the medication. During his years on Friends, his dependence deepened, and his tolerance climbed even further. In fact, Chandler and Monica’s Season 7 wedding was filmed while Perry was moving in and out of treatment. Mia Perry Bowick, his sister, also revealed that both sides of her brother’s family were present for the taping of the wedding episodes.

"The unspoken truth that we all were sitting with in some way or another, was, ‘Is this his wedding?," Bowick said.

Throughout Friends’ run, the cast and crew made adjustments to accommodate Perry’s treatment needs. They coordinated schedules to allow him to travel between rehabilitation facilities and the stage, the kind of support Perry would later credit with saving his life.

Despite his own addiction, Matthew Perry helped others in recovery

Matthew Perry knew the pain of addiction firsthand. Therefore, behind his own fight for recovery, Perry was also quietly helping others confront addiction. Tim Harrington, who met the actor at a recovery meeting in 2001, recalled a time when he was on the verge of a relapse and preparing to live out of his car. But when he reached out to Perry, the actor offered him a place to stay instead.

"He saved my life right there in my moment. I believe that," Harrington stated.

Harrington, too, became a pillar of support in Perry’s recovery journey. He would join him for daily 7:30 am AA meetings at West Hollywood’s Log Cabin to play Train’s 'Drops of Jupiter' for the actor.  The director of the Netflix documentary series, Mary Robertson, also thanked Harrington.

"Matthew helped so many people who were in recovery, both through his public-facing and private actions... I'm so lucky that his once-upon-a-time really close friend Tim Harrington chose to participate in the documentary.”

Matthew Perry's fascination with a masked hero

Mia Perry Bowick shares in the series that Matthew Perry was obsessed with Batman from a very young age. He was said to have resonated with the character's troubled backstory, survival, and desire to use wealth for good. The connection remained with him well into adulthood. After Perry emerged from a coma in 2018, following a ruptured colon and sepsis, his sister came across a Batman action figure beneath his bed.

“I don't understand how it got from the ER to the surgery and then back over to the ICU,” she says.

“It remained in his hospital room going forward, and then it was in his home after that."

Accident or crime? The truth behind Matthew Perry’s death

Like many others, Matthew Perry’s family initially believed he had suffered a sudden heart attack. But as Mia Perry Bowick reveals in the docuseries, the official autopsy report turned their understanding of his death on its head. Turns out, the actor had died from the acute effects of ketamine. What made the discovery all the more shocking was that his family had no idea he had been obtaining the drug through unregulated sources, beyond his supervised ketamine therapy sessions.

The third part of the series sheds light on the investigation into the people who provided Perry with the ketamine that caused his death. E. Martin Estrada, the former US attorney who brought the case, called the operation “a broad underground criminal network”.

Perry initially obtained ketamine from Drs. Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez, who supplied the drug after he began using it recreationally following an initial medical prescription. He later acquired ketamine through Jasveen Sangha. Sangha sold the drug through an intermediary, Erik Fleming, and supplied the dose that ultimately caused Perry’s death, as per Estrada. Perry’s assistant, Kenny Iwamasa, was also involved, in this activity.

Although those involved in supplying Perry with ketamine were handed prison sentences and other penalties, the death sure blurred the line between a tragic accident and a criminal act.
