Viewers do not need to watch the old 1970s TV show before starting the new adaptation on Netflix. According to Tudum, the brand-new Netflix series Little House on the Prairie focuses strictly on the third book by Laura Ingalls Wilder, set outside the developing town of Independence. It follows a true wagon-trail migration and the intense struggle of building a life from scratch on open land. The 1974 show set the vast majority of its nine-season run in the established community of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

Netflix series leans heavily into the specific, terrifying physical dangers from the book, like fever, wolves, and prairie fires. At the same time, the original show functioned primarily as a weekly family drama focused on community conflicts, schoolhouse rivalries, and moral lessons, rather than a constant, raw battle against nature. Netflix will tell the parallel stories to highlight the devastating consequences of westward expansion on the Osage Nation, but the original project kept the perspective entirely centred on white settlers.

In 2026, Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie will keep Jack (the dog) prominently by the family's side through their initial journey. The original 1974 series has nine seasons. In the original show, Jack was a beloved staple of the early seasons, but his role was mostly that of a gentle, comforting town pet until he was tragically written off in season four.

According to the showrunner of the Netflix series, Rebecca Sonnenshine, the core themes are reinvention, self-discovery, and the complex choices people make in search of a better life.

“It’s about people deciding who they want to be and looking for a better life,” Sonnenshine told Tudum. The original show is driven by Michael Landon's vision of faith, traditional family values, community bonding, and finding joy and love through simple, honest, hard work.

Historic television milestones and international adaptations of Little House

Before Netflix reimagined the classic novels, multiple screen versions successfully brought the frontier family to life. The celebrated nine-season television series Little House on the Prairie (1974–1983), starring Michael Landon, remains the most famous adaptation, focusing heavily on warm moral lessons.

Later, a 2005 six-part television miniseries broadcast by the ABC network attempted to stay closer to the specific literary text. Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder (2000 & 2002) is a two-part television movie series that focuses heavily on the author's adult life. Furthermore, Laura, the Prairie Girl (1975 Anime), a 26-episode Japanese animated series, introduced the frontier storyline to a massive global audience across Asia and Europe.
