Netflix has become a second home for anime fans. From global sensations like Dandadan, Blue Box, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Delicious in Dungeon, and Sakamoto Days to evergreen classics such as One Piece and Hunter x Hunter, the streamer has built a library that feels almost impossible to outgrow. That is exactly why the arrival of False Memory has sparked one familiar question. Is this visually stunning new donghua already part of Netflix's ever-expanding anime collection?
The answer may surprise viewers because one of this season's most talked about animated releases has taken a very different path.
Is False Memory streaming on Netflix?
No, False Memory, also known by its original title Memory Management Bureau, is not streaming on Netflix. The Chinese animated series, or donghua, premiered on August 2, 2026, with its first episodes launching exclusively on Bilibili in China. International audiences can watch the series for free through the official YouTube release channels instead of a subscription streaming service. The series is produced by Flint Sugar and Studio Tumble.
The absence of False Memory on Netflix is particularly notable because the platform has steadily embraced animation over the years, while competitors such as Prime Video have also increased investments in anime and donghua. Yet some creators still choose direct digital distribution to reach a global audience without licensing delays. That is the route False Memory has taken, allowing viewers around the world to experience the series for free on YouTube via the Made by Bilibili channel, while maintaining its exclusive domestic release on Bilibili.
Its streaming home may be different, but its premise is one of the most intriguing stories to emerge from this year's animation lineup.
What is False Memory about?
Based on the award-winning 2020 independent short film, False Memory follows Guan Chao, a young man desperate to return to the past after losing someone important. His search for the mysterious energy source known as the Burning Stone accidentally leads him into the Memory Management Bureau, an organization responsible for repairing corrupted memories. Alongside memory administrators Fang Tang and Bai Zhong, Guan Chao ventures through layered memory worlds to retrieve dangerous "Bug" entities that threaten reality itself.
The voice cast includes Da Hou as Fang Tang, Ran Tu as Bai Zhong, Mo Ling as Guan Chao, and Xu Yuan as Xiao Yi. Directed by Li Shuyu and BlackLine, the series retains the distinctive visual identity that has turned the original short film into a cult favorite while expanding its world with larger-scale battles, layered mysteries, and themes of grief, memory, and healing. With seven planned episodes, False Memory is already being praised as one of the most ambitious original donghua releases of 2026.
Although Netflix subscribers will have to look elsewhere for this one, False Memory is readily available for audiences willing to explore beyond the usual streaming giants. Have you started watching this new donghua yet?
