Its next addition, FOOL NIGHT, takes a decidedly darker route, bringing together Sunrise and SHAFT for their first-ever collaboration.

With its November premiere approaching, the anime has also unveiled its main trailer, key visual, and theme songs. Here is everything to know about FOOL NIGHT, from its release date and premise to the creative team behind the adaptation.

When will FOOL NIGHT premiere on Netflix?

Beyond its acclaimed source material, the Netflix anime also brings together two major animation studios for a collaboration that makes the adaptation particularly noteworthy. Sunrise and SHAFT are joining forces for the first time, with an experienced creative team and a voice cast bringing Yasuda's unsettling world to life.

What is the story of FOOL NIGHT?

The anime, as per the Netflix trailer presents a chilling question: would you give up your humanity to save the world? Set in a distant future where thick clouds have blocked sunlight for a century, the planet has been plunged into permanent darkness and winter. Most vegetation has withered away, creating a severe oxygen shortage.

Humanity's solution is a technology called Transfloration, which implants seeds into the bodies of people nearing death and transforms them into plants capable of producing oxygen. The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man struggling with poverty and the responsibility of caring for his sick mother. Between taxes, daily expenses, and her medication, he finds himself increasingly trapped by circumstances beyond his control.

What begins as a desperate attempt to escape his circumstances gradually develops into a much larger mystery, brought to motion by a team only equally astonishing.

Who is behind the Sunrise and SHAFT collaboration?

The project brings together two influential Japanese animation studios for the first time. Sunrise is known for franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam and Cowboy Bebop, while SHAFT has developed a distinctive visual identity through works such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series. Atsushi Yukawa directs the adaptation, with Jin Tanaka handling series composition and Robert Sato designing the characters.
