Season 2 of One Piece continues its cheerful habit of introducing characters who look as though they wandered in from the most imaginative corners of the Grand Line. Among them is Mr. 9, a bounty hunter with a flair for acrobatics, dramatic entrances, and loyalties that seem to change with the wind.

As the mysterious Baroque Works begins to take shape in the story, viewers have found themselves asking two perfectly reasonable questions: who exactly is the actor bringing Mr. 9 to life—and does the character possess any Devil Fruit powers?

Daniel Lasker portrayed the character of Mr. 9 in the live-action adaptation of One Piece. He joined the expanding cast as the story moved deeper into the world created by Eiichiro Oda, where the Straw Hats encountered new allies and enemies connected to Baroque Works. Mr. 9 appeared as a Frontier Agent within the organization, a rank assigned to operatives responsible for carrying out bounty missions and field operations. His introduction helped establish the early structure and hierarchy of Baroque Works in the live-action storyline.

He initially appeared alongside Nefertari Vivi, who was operating under the alias Miss Wednesday. The pair first crossed paths with the Straw Hat crew while attempting to hunt the giant whale Laboon for food during the Reverse Mountain storyline. Although he started out opposing the Straw Hats, Mr. 9 later showed a more sympathetic side during the Whisky Peak arc.

Outside of One Piece, David Lasker had been known for his work in the sci-fi series Raised by Wolves. His appearance in the live-action adaptation added to the diverse international cast that brought many of the manga’s characters into the streaming series. David Lasker had also appeared in projects such as Black Sails and the thriller film Good Madam, building a steady career across television and film, which makes his turn as Mr. 9 all the more entertaining.

In the peculiar world of Baroque Works, the character stands out not for supernatural flair, but for a fighting style that is unusual in a far more human way.

What were the abilities of Mr. 9 in One Piece?

Unlike many characters in the One Piece universe, Mr. 9 did not possess a Devil Fruit power. While several members of Baroque Works relied on supernatural abilities granted by these mysterious fruits, Mr. 9 depended entirely on physical skill, agility, and weapon techniques. His fighting style revolved around acrobatics and momentum-based attacks. Mr. 9 used a pair of steel bats as his primary weapons, swinging them while performing flips, cartwheels, and other gymnastic moves to increase their impact. The bats also concealed steel ropes, which he used to trap or restrain opponents during combat.

Despite his flashy movements, Mr. 9 was not among the strongest Baroque Works agents. During his encounters with characters like Roronoa Zoro, his acrobatic techniques proved ineffective against more skilled fighters. At times, his clumsiness even worked against him, highlighting the gap between him and higher-ranking agents such as Mr. 5.

Mr. 9 remained a memorable supporting character in One Piece Season 2 because of his quirky personality and unusual combat style. Portrayed by Daniel Lasker, the character began as a minor antagonist but eventually showed loyalty and courage, particularly in his efforts to protect Vivi from other Baroque Works agents. With Daniel Lasker taking on the role in the live-action One Piece, the character’s quirky energy and unpredictable fighting style translated well to the screen.
