Wales council, according to Wales Online, has sparked controversy by linking its tourism promotion plan to Netflix’s hit series Sex Education. The council’s 35-page destination management plan highlights the title’s filming locations around Tintern, the Wye Valley, and more, promoting its links to Monmouthshire County to attract tourists. While tourism generated USD 403 million for Monmouthshire in 2024, Conservative councillor Richard John questioned the appropriateness of featuring a teen s-- comedy in official promotional material, citing concerns about its mature storyline.

Labour councillor, Sara Burch, per Wales Online, defended the inclusion, though, emphasizing the series’ global fanbase and awards recognition as a legitimate tool to boost tourism. She argued that highlighting Sex Education could attract visitors to the county, benefiting local businesses and supporting jobs, while leveraging Monmouthshire’s scenic landscapes. The plan also targets niche visitors, including cyclists, hikers, and golfers. The Netflix effort in discussion, notably, not only received viewers’ appreciation and critical acclaim but helped propel the career of one of its stars.

As Monmouthshire navigates the fine line between promoting its scenic charm and courting controversy, the debate over Sex Education-inspired tourism underscores the broader tension between pop culture and community values. While one side questions the ethics of using a teen comedy with adult themes to draw visitors, the other embraces opportunities to shine a spotlight on Wales. However, while the council may continue to debate this, the natives do not seem to mind links to entertainment or with a specific Hollywood star at all.
