Kanye West, now legally known as Ye, has long commanded attention with his bold artistry and unpredictable moves. His latest venture, a documentary titled In Whose Name? turned out to be exactly one of those, as it attempted to stir conversation but instead appears to have drawn heavy criticism.

In Whose Name? arrived in theaters today, September 19, but the buzz around it has not been what Ye might have wished for. When the documentary’s official handle shared a promotional clip hailing the 'Vultures' hitmaker as a “cultural icon,” netizens pushed back sharply, dismissing the label and asserting the film does not deserve their attention. Instead of sparking intrigue, X has swiftly dismissed the title as "unworthy," citing numerous reasons.

Running for 106 minutes, In Whose Name?, notably, is directed by Nico Ballesteros, who started filming the project in 2018 when he was just 18. It follows Ye through six intense years (2018–2024), compiling over 3,000 hours of raw, never-before-seen footage. The film stars Ye himself, with appearances by Kim Kardashian, Drake, Pharrell Williams, Elon Musk, and others. Even with the star-studded lineup, fans are not impressed.

X users reacted with sharp criticism, quickly dismissing In Whose Name? as overhyped and not worth their time or money. Many rejected the idea of Ye, formerly Kanye West, as a cultural icon, pointing to his controversial past, including antisemitic remarks, as evidence that the documentary’s premise was misguided. The micro-blogging platform was filled with ridicule and disbelief, with commentators calling out the film as exaggerated. 

Alternatively, some people did ask when the effort would land on streaming, suggesting it might still have a chance at redemption if the makers make it available for low-cost at-home viewing. 

Clearly, Ye’s latest venture has stirred more criticism and zero positive conversation for him. In Whose Name? may find an audience online, but its theatrical debut has left a mark of skepticism. In the world of high-profile projects, even a figure as influential as Ye appears not immune to harsh judgment. This documentary stands as an example of that and as a moment where ambition met resistance.
