The world's biggest sporting event is finally here, and it has arrived with a spectacle befitting its historic scale. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted across three nations, the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marks the first time in tournament history that three countries have shared the honour of welcoming the world to their shores. Spanning 16 cities and packed with 104 matches, this edition is the largest the sport has ever seen.
Before a single ball was kicked, the tournament rolled out three separate opening ceremonies, each a reflection of the host nation putting its best cultural foot forward. The build-up had been months in the making, and the payoff was a lineup of performers that spanned continents, genres, and generations. From Latin icons to Canadian legends to global pop royalty, the musical slate alone was reason enough to tune in before the first whistle blew.
While Mexico City ignited the stage with Latin fire, Toronto brought Canadian heart, and Los Angeles closed the curtain with an all-star pop spectacle.

Mexico
Shakira led the charge as the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially came alive in Mexico City, joined by a roster of Latin and global music giants. Burna Boy stood alongside her to perform 'Dai Dai,' the official anthem of the tournament, as the two superstars opened proceedings at Estadio Azteca before Mexico faced South Africa. The rest of the Mexico City lineup was equally stacked, featuring Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and Tyla, a lineup that spanned generations of Latin music and signalled the cultural weight Mexico brought to this moment.
Mexico is represented by three host cities at this tournament: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Mexico City's Estadio Azteca carries deep historical resonance, being one of only two venues in the world to have hosted two FIFA World Cup finals. While Guadalajara was limited to group stage matches, Mexico City and Monterrey carried games deep into the knockout rounds, cementing Mexico's central role in one of football's most ambitious editions.
As the Latin energy faded in Mexico City, Toronto stepped into the spotlight to give Canada its long-awaited moment on football's grandest stage.
Canada
Michael Bublé headlined the Toronto opening ceremony on June 12, bringing the warmth of Canada's most beloved musical export to the country's first-ever men's World Cup as a host nation. Fellow Canadian stars Alessia Cara and Alanis Morissette joined him on stage, turning the celebration into a tribute to the depth of Canadian musical talent. The lineup extended beyond borders as well, with Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna, French artist Vegedream performing his beloved 2018 World Cup anthem 'Ramenez la coupe à la maison,' Jessie Reyez, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, and William Prince all performing before Canada took on Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Canada hosted the tournament across two cities: Toronto and Vancouver. Toronto Stadium served as the stage for the opening ceremony, while BC Place in Vancouver rounded out the Canadian contingent. Both cities hosted games beyond the group stage, meaning Canada's venues featured some of the tournament's most consequential matches as the competition intensified over the preceding weeks.
From the Great White North, the action shifted south to California, where Los Angeles closed the opening ceremony chapter in the grandest fashion imaginable.
United States
Katy Perry headlined the Los Angeles opening ceremony on June 12, bringing the full force of pop spectacle to her home state of California. Joining Perry was a lineup that spanned genres and continents: Future, Anitta, BLACKPINK's Lisa, Rema, and Tyla all performed in what proved to be the most high-octane of the three ceremonies. Country duo Dan + Shay performed the United States national anthem ahead of the host nation's opening match against Paraguay, while Paraguayan folk-pop group Purahei Soul sang Paraguay's national anthem, a thoughtful touch that honoured both nations stepping onto the pitch. Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis, serving as a FIFA World Cup 2026 ambassador, was also present to welcome fans to the city.

MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the tournament's final, cementing the United States as the centrepiece of this historic tri-nation event. The venues span iconic NFL stadiums that were upgraded specifically to meet FIFA's standards, ensuring that fans across the country experienced the tournament at its very best.
