The term "Konnakol", Zayn Malik himself makes known, is a South Asian Carnatic art of vocalization, of performing syllables in a percussive manner, resulting in music-like reverberations. While it is not confirmed how Malik plans on translating the practice, the atmosphere he has created around this album, that of tranquility felt when surrounded by repetitive stimuli, is more than apparent.
Zayn Malik is of British-Pakistani descent, which justifies how deeply he has often integrated his South Asian heritage into his artistry. Influences of Urdu, classical Bollywood, and Qawwali are easily spotted in his pop and R&B music. He often showcases his culture by fusing his Western roots with fashion, food, and even covers music belonging to his paternal roots.
As Malik strums his strings to the tunes of his descendants, some of his former bandmates are strumming their footsteps to the music charts.
One Direction's several-headed trysts
Only weeks before Zayn Malik, his former bandmate Harry Styles had cleared the way for his own fourth studio album. Titled 'Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally', it has been showing signs of broken records with the height its single 'Aperture' has touched. As of February 2, 2026, Styles' single debuted at the No.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Louis Tomlinson, yet another former bandmate, also saw his third studio album, 'How Did I Get Here', topple several sales charts across the UK. It was released on January 23, 2026.
