Those who follow the pop sensation The Weeknd can attest to the fact that the singer was going through a rough patch for quite some time, igniting retirement rumors. But he has recently found tremendous success with a massive stadium run, breaking records on his After Hours Til Dawn Tour. Plus, he surprised fans by walking back on his retirement decision in his recent Stockholm concert, simultaneously teasing that something is close.

This enigmatic on-stage reveal has prompted fans to speculate about a new album from the Grammy-winning singer.

The Weeknd drops a massive hint at his next era

The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) surprised fans by publicly changing his earlier plans to retire during his three-night After Hours Til Dawn Tour in August 2026 at Stockholm's Strawberry Arena. However, what grabbed more attention was a mysterious phrase dropped by the singer mid-performance that has got fans hopeful for a new album.

“We are getting closer to …” the singer said during the live performance.

Speculation about a new song or project was further fueled by his performance of unreleased recorded vocal fragments during the performance of 'EVA'. He also changed the live lyrics of 'Save Your Tears' to make it clear that "I'll never disappear," reversing his earlier suggestions that he would completely retire the pseudonym The Weeknd. Instead of leaving the limelight, he affirmed that he plans to continue creating songs.

A decision that was long in the making

The Weeknd stated in a 2023 interview with W Magazine that while he has thought about giving up his stage name, he does not wish to retire from music. When he released his most recent studio album, 'Hurry Up Tomorrow,' he reaffirmed those intentions by hinting to audiences that "the end is near."
