Taylor Swift’s 'The Fate of Ophelia' has been here, there, and practically everywhere except subtly. Swift’s record-breaking lead single from 'The Life of a Showgirl' has conquered the Billboard Hot 100, saturated radio, and turned its Shakespearean inspiration into a full-blown cultural conversation. With nine weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and enough Shakespearean buzz to resurrect Hamlet, glory at the VMAs was a foregone conclusion for the song.

And yet while Taylor Swift has made her mark at this year's VMAs, the track is conspicuously absent from a particular category, proving that even a song this omnipresent can still miss the party.

Taylor Swift’s 'The Fate of Ophelia' suffered its biggest 2026 MTV Video Music Awards blow by being shut out of Song of the Year, despite becoming one of the eligibility period’s biggest commercial juggernauts. Considering how the category usually considers a song's popularity as well as commercial success, 'The Fate of Ophelia's absence from the category is especially eyebrow-raising.

Still, Swift has hardly been banished from the VMA ballroom, collecting nine nominations and trailing only Madonna in the overall count. 'The Fate of Ophelia' is competing for Video of the Year and Best Pop, while Swift herself is up for Artist of the Year. The video also collected six technical nods, because apparently one snub required an entire consolation buffet.

Those craft nominations include Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography, and Best Visual Effects, all recognizing the video's elaborate visual world. The Millais-inspired production has clearly impressed the technical voters, even if Song of the Year did not. Should Swift win even once, she will leapfrog Beyoncé and claim the VMA crown with 31 career victories.

The youngest Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee may have an omission from the Song of the Year category to explain, but the category still boasts plenty of worthy contenders.

The VMAs have assembled quite the musical dinner party for Song of the Year, inviting BTS with 'Swim', Ella Langley with 'Choosin' Texas', and HUNTR/X with 'Golden'. Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter arrive with 'Bring Your Love', while Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson, and RAYE complete this wonderfully mismatched guest list.

There is K-pop, country, British soul, glossy pop, theatrical storytelling, and one rather glamorous cross-generational collaboration, so musical variety is certainly not lacking. Olivia Dean also makes her VMA debut as a nominee, while Madonna arrives with a ceremony-leading 11 nominations. With 'The Fate of Ophelia' missing, these seven songs inherit the Song of the Year spotlight.
