One might think the trophy cabinet had surrendered. Apparently, it had not.

Swift is now making MTV VMA history as the first recipient of the Artist-Director Award, because evidently another first was required.

Taylor Swift is adding another record to a résumé already packed with them. In a joint press release issued by CBS and MTV on September 21, 2026, the networks announced that Swift will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The honor will take her VMA total to 31, moving her past Beyoncé’s 30.

The distinction also recognizes a side of Swift that has increasingly moved from behind the microphone to behind the camera. She has earned seven VMA nominations for Best Direction and won four, including for 'The Man' in 2020. Her directing credits also include All Too Well: The Short Film, 'Anti-Hero,' 'Bejeweled,' 'Lavender Haze,' and 'Karma (feat. Ice Spice).'

The timing makes the honor especially neat: Swift will receive the first Artist Director Honors while extending her own VMA record. With 30 competitive VMA wins already tying Beyoncé, the inaugural award gives Taylor Swift sole possession of the record for most VMA trophies. The 2026 ceremony takes place September 27 in Los Angeles, with Snoop Dogg hosting.

Taylor Swift’s VMA attendance is still officially unconfirmed, even with the inaugural Artist Director Honors now carrying her name. MTV and CBS have not announced whether she will appear in person, leaving fans to wonder if Swift will turn up to collect the history-making honor herself. The singer has, however, been making more high-profile appearances lately, including returning to Kansas City Chiefs games to support her husband, Travis Kelce.

Swift has not attended the VMAs since September 2024, when she collected seven trophies, including Video of the Year for 'Fortnight,' before skipping the 2025 ceremony. A return on September 27 would mark her first VMA appearance in two years and give her a fitting opportunity to personally accept the honor that makes her the most awarded artist in VMA history.
