Some red carpet moments are forgettable, and some quietly become the most talked-about clip of the night. At the 2026 American Music Awards, Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik had something surprisingly specific to say about Taylor Swift, and nobody quite saw it coming. The rock veteran, best known for 'Iris' and decades of earnest songwriting, delivered a candid, unscripted moment of admiration that cut through an entire evening of glamour and nominations.
While most artists were building empires out of brand deals and business ventures, one artist quietly built hers out of verses.

On the American Music Awards red carpet, Variety asked John Rzeznik whether he counts himself among Taylor Swift's fanbase, and his answer was anything but a polite deflection. He pointed specifically to Swift's choice to step away from the noise and focus entirely on her craft while others chased trends. Rather than capitalise on fame through side ventures, Swift doubled down on what made her famous in the first place.
"When all the other great female artists were like going out and starting clothing lines and makeup lines and all that other stuff, she went out to the woods and doubled down on her songwriting," Rzeznik told Variety on the red carpet.
He then added that Swift "put out three incredible records that are undeniable," a sentiment that captures exactly why her peers continue to tip their hats.
The contrast Rzeznik draws is not subtle. Rihanna built Fenty Beauty into a billion-dollar brand as her music output slowed considerably. Selena Gomez launched Rare Beauty to enormous success, with the business often overshadowing her album cycles. Beyoncé masterfully wove Ivy Park and film projects into her releases, making branding inseparable from the art. Swift, by comparison, released 'Folklore' and 'Evermore' with no product launch, no campaign, just songs, stripped bare and critically adored.
As John Rzeznik championed Taylor Swift from the American Music Awards red carpet, the woman herself was conspicuously absent from the evening.
Taylor Swift skips the 2026 American Music Awards despite eight nominations
Taylor Swift did not attend the 2026 American Music Awards, despite leading this year's nominations with eight nods. Her album 'The Life of a Showgirl' earned recognition in Album of the Year and Best Pop Album, while 'Fate of Ophelia' competes across three major categories. E! News confirmed the absence, noting Swift had very limited availability this spring. Insiders have linked her New York presence to active preparations for her reported July 3 wedding to Travis Kelce.

The reported wedding guest list sits at approximately 150, pulling from both worlds: Swift's ride-or-dies like Selena Gomez, the Haim sisters, and Gigi Hadid, alongside Kelce's closest, Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes. Any trophies Swift earns at the American Music Awards today will be collected in absentia. John Rzeznik said she went to the woods when others chased trends, now Swift is choosing a wedding aisle over a trophy stage, and somehow that tracks perfectly.
