As per Variety, Sabrina Carpenter shared insights on criticisms regarding what many deem provocative lyrics. Carpenter is acutely aware of the criticism surrounding her mature lyrical content, particularly from listeners who followed her career since her Girl Meets World days on Disney Channel. She believes much of the backlash stems from her history as a childhood figure, noting the difficulty in escaping that initial perception.

Carpenter offered a direct rebuttal to those who police her image, stating it is not her fault that she got a job when she was 12, and she said, “You won’t let me evolve”, slamming the backlashers.

The artist argued while speaking to Variety that her sophisticated and often sarcastic songwriting, especially on the album ‘Man's Best Friend’, is frequently misunderstood. She emphasized that her lyrics are meant to reflect a complicated reality: a smart woman can be in control while also knowingly making mistakes in her personal life.

Carpenter asserted that she is simply documenting her experiences honestly, and if critics do not appreciate her evolution, then her music is likely not intended for them.
