Angélique Kidjo is no doubt among the best-selling musicians that Africa has produced in recent years. She possesses a unique voice, and her West African music is a fusion of different world music forms. She is from Benin and has had a wonderful career spanning several decades. Now, she is also part of the rich legacy honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On Tuesday, August 18, Angélique Kidjo was presented with the 2,854th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a ceremony in Los Angeles. She is the first African musician and first Black African artist to receive a star in the Recording category with the honor. This milestone is an important moment for her and recognizes Kidjo’s decades-long contribution to music, her international influence, and her remarkable career as a five-time Grammy Award winner.

The singer was awarded the star as part of the Class of 2026. The list also features artists such as Miley Cyrus, Josh Groban, Lyle Lovett and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Speakers at the ceremony included Oscar-nominated Werwulf actor Willem Dafoe and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. Among those in attendance were Benin-born actor Djimon Hounsou and Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kidjo said the achievement was a milestone for Africa and not a personal achievement. She said that the star belongs not just to her but to the continent and its artists. Her recognition is a message to a younger generation of African musicians on how the continent’s sounds, stories and traditions can find audiences without losing their identity.
