As reported by Variety, Kanye West is currently scheduled to headline the Hellwat Festival on July 18 at the massive RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia. This venue holds over 100,000 people, representing one of the largest performances of his career. However, the announcement has triggered a fierce backlash from the local Jewish community and various anti-fascist organizations.
Pina Picierno, the vice president of the European Parliament, has publicly criticized the Italian government for its inaction. She noted that France and the United Kingdom have already successfully prevented similar events.
"Italy, meanwhile, is just staying idle with 68,000 tickets sold, as if nothing had happened", Picierno told La Gazzetta di Reggio.
The choice of location is particularly sensitive because Reggio Emilia has a historic reputation for resisting Nazi forces during World War II. Many residents feel that hosting an artist who has expressed admiration for such ideologies is a direct insult to their heritage. Political unions continue to lobby for a total ban on the event to maintain civic integrity.
Organizers, on the other hand, defend the show as a matter of artistic freedom while citing the rapper's medical history.
Festival organizers stand firm despite rising national outrage
As reported by Variety, the Mayor of Reggio Emilia, Marco Massari, has distanced himself from the musician's controversial remarks. He stated that the final authority regarding entry into the country rests with the Ministry of the Interior rather than local officials. So far, the national government has remained silent regarding whether the performance will proceed.
Artistic director Victor Yari Milani defended the festival as a space for free expression and pointed to the rapper's recent public apology. He mentioned that Kanye West previously attributed his behavior to bipolar disorder and manic episodes.
"The artist’s past comments have certainly provoked a legitimate reaction, but we also want to remember that Ye formally apologized", Milani stated.

The festival lineup still includes major international stars such as Travis Scott and Martin Garrix. While Italy remains the primary focus of the current controversy, the tour is also slated to visit Turkey, Spain, and Portugal. Fans and critics alike are now waiting to see if the Italian Ministry will intervene before the July start date.
