JPEGMAFIA Sparks Debate After Comparing Kanye West to Justin Bieber Amid UK Ban

Published 05/07/2026, 12:10 AM EDT

Rapper JPEGMAFIA has never been one to keep his opinions quiet, and his latest remarks are already making rounds across social media. The Baltimore-bred artist weighed in on Kanye West, now Ye, being denied entry into the United Kingdom, the subsequent Wireless Festival cancellation, and drew a pointed comparison to Justin Bieber that stopped the internet in its tracks. He believes a deeply uneven standard is applied to Black artists in the music industry, and his words have not stopped echoing since.

While a UK ban silenced West's festival run, JPEGMAFIA had plenty to say, and Justin Bieber's name was just the beginning.

JPEGMAFIA drew a sharp r***** line around the entire situation. He argued that mental health struggles in Black men are met with punishment rather than patience. He pointed to Kanye West's bipolar disorder and public breakdowns as context that gets conveniently ignored.

"If Ye looked like Justin Bieber, none of this would be happening," he said in a Pigeons and Planes interview released around May 6, 2026.

JPEGMAFIA then added, "They want him to be canceled...people will always love Ye because he made a dent in culture," emphasizing that cultural legacy simply cannot be undone by a government ban.

JPEGMAFIA was equally clear that defending West does not mean endorsing the remarks that landed him in this position. West's antisemitic statements, his praise of Hitler, and his swastika merchandise were the precise reasons the UK Home Office ruled his presence "not conducive to the public good," ultimately pulling the plug on Wireless Festival entirely. JPEGMAFIA separated West's documented mental illness from the harm caused, framing it as grace being selectively withheld rather than justice being fairly applied.

And while JPEGMAFIA name-dropped Bieber to make his point, the two men actually share a history that makes the comparison hit even harder.

Kanye West and Justin Bieber go way back

Justin Bieber and Kanye West actually share a longer history than most people remember. The two first connected in 2010 through a collaboration on a remix of 'Runaway Love,' released as part of West's G.O.O.D. Friday's series. Bieber later visited West at his Wyoming ranch in 2020 amid mental health concerns, standing by him publicly when few others did. That friendship held steady across nearly a decade of mutual respect and studio camaraderie.

The relationship unraveled in 2022 when West began targeting Hailey Bieber on social media, crossing a personal line that Bieber could not overlook, and the two have not collaborated since. Bieber himself returned to the spotlight at Coachella 2026, reminding audiences of his own cultural staying power. Meanwhile, West remains banned from the UK, a stark reminder that legacy alone does not guarantee a stage.
