“I’m so sick…”- MGK Opens Up About Choosing Only Trusted Friends for the Making of ‘Lost Americana’
MGK’s seventh studio album, ‘Lost Americana’, arrived on August 8, 2025, carrying both artistic reinvention and deep personal sentiment. Departing from his pop-punk roots, the collection blends Americana’s country, folk, and heartland rock influences with his distinctive style. Narration from Bob Dylan in the album trailer adds weight to its nostalgic and freedom-seeking themes. Preceded by singles ‘cliché’, ‘vampire diaries’, and ‘miss sunshine’, the record is dedicated to his late friend Luke “The Dingo” Trembath, whose memory inspired a profoundly intimate creative process.
He has now revealed that only his most trusted friends could capture the vulnerability, grit, and unfiltered truth that shaped ‘Lost Americana’.

Speaking on The New York Times’s Popcast, MGK revealed that ‘Lost Americana’ was born from a simple conversation with his best friend: “We should do this again.” He explained his decision to work only with his closest friends, saying, “I am so sick of people feeling like, to hit it big with a song, there’s this recipe… miss me with that.” He shared that trust, authenticity, and shared vision mattered more than chasing trends.
MGK elaborated that he had collaborated with artists who approached music with a formulaic mindset, a perspective he deeply dislikes despite respecting their talent. He likened it to drinking a “churried cup of coffee” rather than savoring a properly brewed, fresh cup. Surrounding himself with trusted friends allowed him to create music that was honest, unfiltered, and free from commercial calculations.
If the music did not make it clear, it is now undeniable that ‘Lost Americana’ is an intensely personal record for MGK, making the album an emotional motivation box.
What does 'Lost Americana' stand for?
MGK’s ‘Lost Americana’ is layered with symbolism, drawing on Bob Dylan’s narration in the album trailer to frame it as a personal excavation of the American dream and a love letter to those who seek to rediscover. The record blends country, folk, and heartland rock with MGK’s own rap and pop-punk influences, creating what Dylan described as a sonic map of forgotten places. The project also arrives as rumors circulate about a possible connection between MGK and actress Sydney Sweeney.

The album is explicitly dedicated to MGK’s late friend Luke "The Dingo" Trembath, with the artist noting on social media that it was the last music Trembath heard before his passing. MGK has said Trembath’s spirit is present throughout the record, shaping its emotional core. He had previously honored Trembath in the song ‘Your Name Forever’, underscoring the depth of their friendship and the lasting influence on his creative vision.
