Halftime at a football final is usually a breather. Players catch their breath, fans grab snacks, and everyone waits for the second half to begin. FIFA decided that was not nearly enough drama for one night. Somewhere between the coin toss and the closing whistle, MetLife Stadium turned into a stage no one quite expected. Purists clutched their pearls. Everyone else grabbed their phones.
While purists still expected a quiet break, FIFA had already swapped the whistle for a setlist, and the guest list was about to prove it.

The FIFA World Cup delivered its first-ever halftime show on Sunday, arriving despite pointed criticism from purists over commercialization and added time eating into the traditional break. Justin Bieber closed his segment with an acoustic rendition of 'Everything Hallelujah,' stripped down to just a guitar. Madonna rode across the field in a car alongside Brazilian football stars, while Shakira and Burna Boy brought high-energy dance numbers on the opposite side. BTS also joined the rotation, hitting their signature choreography in front of a global audience.

The performance was staged in partnership with Global Citizen, an anti-poverty organization, with proceeds directed toward the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. The fund's advisory board includes Gianni Infantino, Ivanka Trump, The Weeknd, Serena Williams and Bank of America co-president Jim DeMare. Donald Trump himself watched the final alongside Infantino, underscoring how tightly political and sporting interests had intertwined around the tournament. Resale tickets for the final reportedly climbed to nearly ten thousand dollars a day before kickoff, reflecting the scale of global demand.
As the numbers proved the tournament's reach, attention turned to how audiences actually experienced the spectacle.
How the FIFA World Cup halftime show reached screens worldwide
Inside MetLife Stadium, the mood stayed relatively subdued, with the show occupying only a small section of the field. Cameras trailed each performer closely, meaning the real spectacle unfolded not for attendees but for audiences tuning in from home. Coverage reached viewers through the tournament's official broadcast partners across multiple countries, ensuring the halftime show traveled far beyond New Jersey. The visual presentation was built for screens first, and the arena second.

Additional footage and highlights later circulated through broadcaster on-demand platforms and official tournament channels, giving audiences another chance to revisit the performances. Segments featuring Bieber, Madonna and Shakira drew particular attention online in the hours after the final whistle. Despite the muted reaction inside the stadium, the show achieved what FIFA intended, placing football alongside pop music on a global stage. The backlash never stood a chance against the spectacle already set in motion.
