Did Michael Jackson Have a Pet Monkey? The Story Behind Bubbles the Chimpanzee

Published 04/24/2026, 11:53 PM EDT

Some celebrities are defined by their music. Others, by the world they build around themselves. Michael Jackson managed both, but behind the gates of Neverland Ranch lived a life most people never fully understood. His personal choices were as extravagant as his stage presence, filled with decisions that constantly raised eyebrows and sparked curiosity. One of those choices, perhaps the most unexpected, became a headline of its own, and the story behind it is far more layered than most people know.

While the world debated his music and his mysteries, Jackson was quietly building something at Neverland that nobody saw coming.

Yes, Michael Jackson had a pet chimpanzee, and no, he did not just have him; he took him on world tours. Bubbles was born in 1983 at a Texas research facility and purchased by Jackson from a Hollywood animal trainer in the mid-1980s. He traveled to Japan on the 'Bad' world tour, shared tea with the mayor of Osaka, and wore matching red military-style suits with Jackson, the most photographed chimp outfit moment in recorded human history.

By the early 2000s, Bubbles had grown to 160 pounds, making Neverland's frequent child visitors a genuine safety concern. In 2003, he was quietly relocated, and by 2005, he found a permanent home at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida. Today, he paints, leads his chimp group with quiet confidence, and receives $30,000 annually from the Jackson estate, enjoying a retirement many humans would envy.

While Bubbles settled into his very comfortable Florida life, back at Neverland, he was barely scratching the surface of Michael Jackson's animal world.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch animals were anything but ordinary

Bubbles was the celebrity face, but Neverland was running a full operation behind those gates. One cannot exactly call it a farm in the Millie Bobby Brown countryside sense, but it is significantly more private, with reptiles included. Michael Jackson owned Muscles, an 8-foot boa constrictor, and Madonna, an 18-foot albino Burmese python, both apparently welcome in the recording studio. Add four giraffes, two llamas named Louie and Lola, Bengal tigers Thriller and Sabu, and Gypsy, a 5,000-pound elephant gifted by Elizabeth Taylor. Completely normal Tuesday at Neverland.

When Jackson's financial troubles hit in the mid-2000s, Neverland's zoo was gradually dismantled. The tigers went to California's Shambala Preserve. The alligators found a home in an Oklahoma zoo. Others were auctioned off, some landing well, others in facilities that animal rights groups later flagged. It was a bittersweet end to one of the most extraordinary private menageries ever assembled. Through all of it, Bubbles remained the one constant, still painting, still thriving, still arguably the most famous chimpanzee alive. Not bad for a research facility kid from Texas.
