Debunking the Myth: Is Joe Alwyn Really Getting Royalties From Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour?

Published 03/28/2024, 1:52 AM EDT

Taylor Swift and her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn teamed up on a bunch of songs across different albums. Their musical partnership spanned tracks from albums like 'Folklore' and 'Evermore', such as ‘Exile,’ ‘Betty,’ ‘Champagne Problems,’ ‘Evermore,’ ‘Coney Island,’ and ‘Sweet Nothing’ from 'Midnights'. However, according to some popular claims, it appears that Swift's collaboration with her ex-boyfriend was a way to ensure he kept reaping the benefits from songwriting credits down the road.

Joe Alwyn is reportedly cashing in a hefty sum from Taylor Swift’s billion-dollar success tour, the Eras Tour. But is that the whole story, or is there more to it?

The chatter about Joe Alwyn bathing in riches from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has been in the news for quite some time. This rumor surfaced after a source dropped a hint about him earning $1 billion from the tour to Life & Style; the same publication that reported Alwyn making approximately $2.3 million from Spotify streams alone. However, the idea that he is cashing in on his ex-girlfriend's tour is somewhat misleading, as the actor and songwriter is only being allegedly paid from the streams and sales of the songs he co-wrote.

During his lengthy relationship with Swift, Joe Alwyn co-wrote six songs under the pseudonym William Bowery. Alwyn revealed to GQ that they were inspired to collaborate while quarantined during the global pandemic. While Alwyn could continue to amass a fortune from Swift’s music for years, the 'Lover' creator's new album could potentially bring unfortunate outcomes for the English actor.

Shortly after Taylor Swift announced 'The Tortured Poets Department', fans quickly unearthed evidence suggesting that Taylor Swift’s upcoming album might revolve around Joe Alwyn. Alwyn and Swift were in a relationship for six years before parting ways last March. Once the album's title was revealed, fans could not help but draw parallels to a WhatsApp group of Alwyn, along with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, since the name of the group was The Tortured Man Club.

Fans also noticed Swift smirking with Paul Mescal's ex, Phoebe Bridgers, at the Grammys, where she announced her album. Additionally, Swift and Alwyn split on April 8, 2023, and 'The Tortured Poets Department' is set to release on April 19, 2024, just 11 days after the first anniversary of their breakup. While their relationship may have ended, the royalties from their songs will continue for many years to come.
