In a heartfelt statement obtained by Variety, the 83-year-old revealed that she has been living with Parkinson's disease. She revealed she kept it private while learning how to navigate an entirely different rhythm of life.

"So many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing. The truth is, I have been learning how to live with Parkinson's disease," Simon shared. 

Simon described the unpredictable nature of the neurological disorder with remarkable honesty in the statement via Variety. Some days leave her unable to gather enough energy to begin the day, while others allow her to move, think, write, and work much like before. She revealed that worsening mobility following knee replacement surgeries and a hip replacement eventually led doctors to suspect something more serious. After an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, she received her Parkinson's diagnosis.

Even as life changed dramatically, Simon made it clear that her creative spirit never disappeared.

Alongside Parkinson's treatment, Carly Simon also revealed that she underwent surgery for basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer affecting her face. Although doctors successfully removed the cancer, the emotional aftermath lingered.

"The cancer was removed, but the surgery affected my appearance and made me more self-conscious about being seen in public," Simon explained in the statement obtained by Variety.

"I have always been more critical of my appearance than anyone else could possibly imagine (check out the irony of having written 'You're So Vain'), and this gave my inner critic quite a lot of new material," she said.

While managing Parkinson's and recovering from surgery, she completed a brand-new album, 'Comes in Waves,' her first full-length studio record since 2008, scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. Simon also rejected any romanticizing of her diagnosis, saying Parkinson's is "neither" a gift nor a blessing, but instead "difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening."
