Bruce Springsteen has spent decades carefully guarding how his music is used, making thoughtful choices about where his songs appear and how they connect with audiences. However, even music legends occasionally look back at certain decisions and wonder whether they should have taken a different path.

That reflection surfaced during a recent appearance at the Tribeca Festival, where a lighthearted exchange with Bono revisited a long-forgotten opportunity. The conversation offered fans a glimpse into a rare professional regret from the rock icon and revealed why one particular decision still lingers in his mind years later.

While presenting Bruce Springsteen with the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award at the Tribeca Festival, Bono recalled an unsuccessful attempt to secure one of the singer's songs for a special project. Bono was partnering with GAP for a clothing line supporting his non-profit and remembered asking Springsteen if he would allow 'Girls in Their Summer Clothes' to be used in a commercial connected to the initiative. Bono explained that while praising Springsteen’s ability to bring a Woody Guthrie sensibility to pop radio, he was reminded of that failed pitch.

“That was a big mistake. I should have said yes, ” Bruce Springsteen said while adding a little humor.

Drawing laughs from the audience, he described the 2008 track as one of his “personal favorites” that the “audience doesn’t really care” about. Looking back, he admitted he still thinks about the decision and believes the exposure could have helped the song reach a wider audience.

Beyond music, Bruce Springsteen made a memorable appearance in the Netflix original series Lilyhammer, starring his longtime friend and E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt. He played Giuseppe, the older brother of Van Zandt’s character Frank Tagliano, a former New York mobster living in witness protection in Norway.

The role marked Springsteen’s dramatic acting debut and his first time portraying a fictional character rather than himself. Appearing in the season three finale, appropriately titled Loose Ends” he surprised many viewers with his performance as a mortuary owner.
