American Idol is officially moving its production away from Los Angeles and setting up base in Georgia. The long-running singing competition has spent years calling the West Coast home, but the industry around it has been shifting for a while now. Cities that once thrived on constant film and television activity are now watching productions choose cheaper pastures elsewhere. This latest move adds another name to that growing list of departures.

While the West Coast counts its losses one soundstage at a time, the numbers behind this exit reveal just how deep the shift really runs.

American Idol packing up for Georgia is a real setback for the Los Angeles production scene, which has been losing ground for years. Producer Fremantle confirmed the move, sending the long-running series east along with a growing list of departures. Shoot days in Los Angeles dropped nearly 13% between April and June compared to last year. Governor Gavin Newsom raised the state tax credit cap to 750 million dollars, but that has not been enough to stop the slide.

Georgia is far from a stranger to big productions, with 280 titles filmed in the state over the last fiscal year, including the Superman sequel, Will Trent, Chad Powers, and several Tyler Perry Studios projects. Even so, Georgia saw production spending fall 40% year over year to 405 million dollars in the second quarter of 2026. California, meanwhile, posted 1.3 billion dollars in the same period, up about 5%. Mayor Karen Bass has pushed for an uncapped tax credit and wants competition reality shows to qualify for incentives too.

While the production numbers shift from coast to coast, the judges' panel keeps cashing in regardless of zip code.

Luke Bryan follows at around 160 million dollars, powered by his country catalog and a touring business that has often topped a million dollars a show. Carrie Underwood, the Season 4 winner turned judge, sits near 120 million dollars thanks to multi-platinum albums, residencies, and her CALIA apparel line.

Richie alone reportedly earns close to 10 million dollars a season, pushing his American Idol paycheck past 90 million dollars across nine seasons. Bryan reportedly pulls in about 12 million dollars a season, while Underwood earns somewhere between 10 and 12.5 million. Former judge Katy Perry still tops them all with a fortune near 350 to 400 million dollars, partly from her own catalog sale and a reported 25 million-dollar salary. The judges' fortunes stay firmly in Los Angeles money even as the show itself heads to Georgia.
