The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are adding another chapter to a ceremony built on visual spectacle, unexpected pairings and pop-culture moments that rarely stay inside the music industry. Since the first VMAs in 1984, the show has turned performances such as Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ into part of its mythology.
This year brings a notable shift as the ceremony returns to Los Angeles and introduces a new set of social categories, including Best Album. The new category now gives six major albums another reason to enter the VMA conversation.

The inaugural Best Album social-category lineup brings together six very different corners of contemporary pop. Drake is represented by ‘Iceman,’ Madonna by ‘Confessions II,’ Olivia Dean by ‘The Art of Loving,’ Olivia Rodrigo by ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,’ Sabrina Carpenter by ‘Man’s Best Friend,’ and Taylor Swift by ‘The Life of a Showgirl.’ The albums span rap, pop and singer-songwriter territory, making the category one of the more interesting additions to this year’s expanded VMA slate.

There is also a useful snapshot of where these records sit in the wider 2026 music conversation. Rodrigo’s ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ and Drake’s ‘Iceman’ have both appeared prominently on international album charts. Dean’s ‘The Art of Loving’ and Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ have also maintained strong chart visibility. Meanwhile, Carpenter’s ‘Man’s Best Friend’ already carries an awards-season credential after winning Album of the Year at the 2026 American Music Awards.
But Best Album is only one piece of a much bigger VMA night.
Snoop Dogg brings the VMAs back to Los Angeles
Snoop Dogg will host the 2026 VMAs live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, with the ceremony airing from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ Premium in the United States. The show will also become available internationally the following day through Paramount+ and MTV.

The social categories will add another layer of fan participation, with voting taking place through MTV’s Instagram Stories. Best Group includes BLACKPINK, BTS, CORTIS, FLO, Fuerza Regida, Geese, KATSEYE and Twenty One Pilots, while Best Long Form Video includes projects from Charli XCX, Ella Langley, GENER8ION and Yung Lean, and Madonna. Madonna also returns to the VMA stage for the first time in 23 years, opening the ceremony with music from ‘Confessions II.’
The 2026 VMAs therefore combine the ceremony’s old appetite for spectacle with a more social-media-driven awards structure, giving fans a direct role in several categories.
