Dolly Parton kept her cancer battle private from fans and even much of her family before her death at 80, according to her sister Stella Parton. And she had her reasons for it. Speaking to Gayle King for CBS Mornings, Stella Parton explained that her older sister, Dolly Parton deliberately kept her cancer diagnosis quiet because she did not want her illness becoming a source of worry.

“She did not want people sad,” she said of her sister, adding that Dolly Parton “could not bear negative things” and did not want her fans concerned about her. Not every relative knew either; according to the younger Parton, only some of the family, particularly those who were closer to Dolly, were aware.

  Stella Parton also told CBS that her sister would have appreciated the enormous public outpouring that followed her death, because she knew that the love shown by fans would bring comfort to her family. The decision makes the secrecy surrounding Parton’s final months more striking. Her representatives confirmed after her death that she had been facing a brief battle with cancer, but neither the type of cancer nor how long she had been ill was disclosed.
