John Wilson is officially bringing the backstage mayhem of Harry Styles' MSG residency to the screens soon. Pop stardom is usually packaged in spectacular close-ups: lights, choreography, screaming crowds, and the singer who somehow remains larger than all of it. Harry Styles has spent his Together, Together tour building a different kind of spectacle, planting himself in cities long enough for a concert to become a shared routine.

At Madison Square Garden, that idea has played out across an unprecedented run of shows, with fans turning New York into a pilgrimage. And now, someone known for finding stories in the everyday has been watching from behind rolling cameras.

John Wilson gets past Harry Styles' Together, Together barricade

Variety has confirmed that John Wilson has been filming Harry Styles at MSG since August for a documentary expected to blend live performances with a look at the singer’s world. It will follow people around the tour, from fans to the crew behind the scenes. The confirmation came shortly after PEOPLE spotted the off-beat documentarian waking hot on Styles' heels with the cameras rolling.

Wilson, creator of HBO’s How To with John Wilson and director of The History of Concrete, is actually an unexpected choice for a pop documentary. His films tend to find the odd in the ordinary. Regardless, Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures and Styles are producing, with Universal Pictures Content Group holding the global rights, as per Variety. A theatrical Universal release is possible, but distribution plans are seemingly yet to be settled.

The camera may be following Styles, but the residency itself has become a New York event with a life beyond the setlist, especially after Styles' return after four years.

Madison Square Garden becomes Harry Styles' home base

Harry Styles' 30-show MSG residency began August 26 and ends on October 31, making it the Garden’s longest single-engagement run. It supports Styles’ fourth album, 'Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.' Tour stops have so far included Amsterdam, London, São Paulo and Mexico City.

Even if numbers were the only thing to go by, Time Out reported 11.5 million presale registrations, with Primary tickets getting sold out. Styles previously sold out 15 consecutive MSG shows in 2022, but this residency format lets him stay put instead of racing between cities.

With this, however, John Wilson gets a contained world to observe: fans returning night after night and the people keeping the machinery moving. While no release date or distribution plan has been announced, the film’s story promises to stretch beyond one star under arena lights.
