Exclusive reports from Deadline indicate that Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are in the early stages of planning a stunning return with a Broadway musical. The musical in question is a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Sunday in the Park With George.
The show is being eyed for a potential summer 2027 opening at the Barbican Theatre in London, directed by the acclaimed Marianne Elliott. Insiders from Deadline are reportedly cautiously optimistic that the complex deal will be finalized, bringing the Wicked co-stars back together.
According to Deadline, this highly anticipated news remains unconfirmed until all critical details are finalized securely. Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey have become fast friends over the past few years while working on the Wicked films alongside Cynthia Erivo. Their off-screen rapport seems to be translating into a desire for further collaboration on the stage.
For the star known for his best performances, Jonathan Bailey, this production would be a reunion with director Elliott, who notably steered his career-supercharging performance in her gender-swapped production of Company.
This treasured musical takes its inspiration from a real-life work of art: Georges Seurat’s renowned painting.
What is Sunday in the Park With George about?
The inspiration for the musical is the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. This complex painting, completed between 1884 and 1886, utilized the pointillist technique (applying small dots) to depict various social classes strolling in a Parisian park.
Lapine and Sondheim used the painting as a starting point, crafting characters and storylines to imagine the lives of the people Seurat depicted. The first act focuses on the artist George and his witty lover and muse, Dot. The same actress later returns in the second act to play Dot’s daughter, Marie.
