Why did the series take a three-year break?
Although several other Netflix series are returning after a long gap, that was mostly due to the pandemic. However, the sci-fi series’ fate was unknown when creators, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones left House of Tomorrow in January 2020. Endemol Shine Group was backing the production house. The creators lost the rights to the series after their separation. Soon after, Banijay Group bought Endemol Shine Group, and rights were transferred to them.
“At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those,” Brooker had said.

But Netflix struck a deal with the Banijay Group that licensed the show to Netflix. Moreover, Brooker and Jones had opened their own production house, Broke and Bones after leaving their previous organization. Interestingly, Netflix has a large stake in the company. It invested approximately $100 million dollars to acquire a part of it for 5 years. So far Brooker has worked closely with Netflix and had produced Death to 2020, Death to 2021 and more recently, Cat Burglar.
