"I disappeared out the back [of the house] so no one could see me on the porch there. And I just had a little silent weep," he said.

Pitt admitted that Cameron Alexander’s script caught him completely off guard once he reached the final pages. The emotional weight became so overwhelming that he stepped away from the house to collect himself privately, giving himself a moment before returning to everyone else. It was a surprisingly personal reaction to a story that had already begun getting under his skin.

That emotional response ultimately convinced Pitt that Heart of the Beast was worth pursuing, because the material had reached him before he had even played James. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor made it clear that being moved so deeply was a sign that the film could carry that same emotional power onto the screen.
