Leo Woodall is not just joining The Lord of the Rings franchise; he is living out a dream he has carried since childhood. The British actor has landed a role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and his reaction says it all. Some castings are career moves, but this one is something else entirely for Woodall, and he has made no attempt to hide it.

As Woodall steps into the boots of a brand-new ranger, one thing is clear: this role did not find him by accident; it found him right on time.

Leo Woodall has been cast as Halvard, a brand-new Dúnedain ranger created specifically for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Halvard does not appear anywhere in J.R.R. Tolkien's original books, making Woodall's portrayal entirely fresh ground within an iconic franchise. The character joins Aragorn's ranks as one of the rangers on the hunt, placing Woodall right at the centre of the action.

"It means everything. It's a boyhood dream for me," Woodall told PEOPLE, making clear just how much this milestone means to him.

He then added, "I watched it as a kid and I've seen it a million times, so to be part of it now is incredible," capturing exactly how profoundly this casting has landed for him.

Before Middle-earth came calling, Woodall had already been quietly stacking a remarkably eclectic résumé. His turn as Jack in The White Lotus Season 2 made him an international name overnight, and his lead role in Netflix's One Day cemented his reputation as a performer of real emotional range. Most recently, he starred in Vladimir opposite Rachel Weisz, a role that has further proven his ability to anchor prestige productions with an undeniable screen presence.

Just as Woodall's star keeps rising with each bold role, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is assembling a cast that matches his ambition step for step.

The Hunt for Gollum's stacked new cast revealed

Leo Woodall joins an ensemble that blends beloved franchise veterans with exciting new additions. Jamie Dornan steps in as Strider, the early alias of Aragorn, while Kate Winslet joins as Marigol, a completely original character. Returning faces include Andy Serkis reprising Gollum (and directing), alongside Elijah Wood as Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Lee Pace as Thranduil.

The film draws from Tolkien's footnotes to dramatise Aragorn's dangerous mission to capture Gollum before the creature can expose the One Ring's location to Sauron. Set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, it fills one of the saga's most tantalising gaps with entirely new storytelling. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens return as producers, with Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou co-writing the screenplay. For Woodall, the boy who watched this world on repeat, December 2027 cannot come soon enough.
