Soon after its arrival on screens, Bugonia had begun to make a stir. It is now available to stream on Peacock and Bundle for subscribers. However, those without subscriptions can also rent the movie on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Understandably, many had been eagerly waiting for the movie, based on the famous 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet, which has been appreciated by critics. The original South Korean film itself won two Korean Film Awards. As for the story, Bugonia follows two conspiracy-fixated friends who abduct a powerful corporate CEO, believing she is actually an alien plotting to wipe out Earth.

This dark comedy and psychological thriller is now nominated for Best Picture, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, and Lead Actress for Stone. This also makes Stone the first woman to be nominated for both producing and acting in a single film.

While the nomination of Emma Stone in both Best Actor and Producer categories is a rarity in itself, it was not the only one that Burgonia has been associated with, thanks to one strange screening policy.

The bizarre screening rule of Bugonia

Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his bold ideas, came up with a unique and bizarre condition for an exclusive early screening scheduled for October 20, 2025, at the Culver Theater. According to DoLA, the event had a strict entry rule, and that is, only bald viewers could attend. Moreover, anyone who arrived with hair was able to shave on-site, as barbers were available starting at 6 p.m.

Emma Stone reportedly shaved her head for her role in the film, so this unusual rule was perhaps included to make the audience part of the experience as well as for promotional purposes. Since this rule does not apply to streaming, this Oscar-nominated movie cannot be missed
