Zendaya’s Stylist Law Roach Breaks Down How a Met Gala Outfit Comes to Life

The Met Gala is fashion's biggest night, and the looks that stop traffic on those steps do not happen by accident. Behind every jaw-dropping ensemble is a stylist orchestrating months of creative chaos. Law Roach, the self-titled image architect who turned Zendaya into a walking fashion thesis, recently pulled back the curtain. He revealed exactly how the magic gets made, and the answer is more strategic than most people imagine.

The process behind a Met Gala outfit, according to Law Roach, is a five-month operation, not a last-minute inspiration. It begins with the designer and theme, moves into inspiration conversations, and then gets handed to the fashion house to execute. Every single step is built around the client.
"It usually starts 5 months in advance. It all starts with what the designer says the client is going with. Once that's figured out, we just have a conversation about inspiration, and then I take it back to my team," Roach shared during his Reddit AMA on r/popculturechat on April 30, 2026.
He then added, "I always like to start with the client, right? Because they're the person who, at the end of it, wears the look, so always get feedback from your client," emphasizing that the client remains the north star of the entire creative process.
Roach does not just dress one superstar; he builds entire fashion identities. He is widely credited with transforming Céline Dion into a high-fashion force in the mid-2010s, a reinvention that fashion circles still talk about. His client list reads like a VIP party guest list: Ariana Grande, Kerry Washington, Megan Thee Stallion, Anya Taylor-Joy, Lewis Hamilton, Venus Williams, and Jennifer Hudson, among dozens of others. At the 2021 Met Gala alone, he styled ten celebrities simultaneously, a logistical feat that cements his reputation as the industry's most prolific image architect.
As Roach dresses half of Hollywood, the one name missing from the 2026 Met Gala steps is his most famous muse.
Where Zendaya stands on attending the 2026 Met Gala
Zendaya is officially skipping the Met Gala 2026 after intense press runs for The Drama and Euphoria Season 3. She is taking a well-earned break before gearing up for The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Adding fuel to the fire, some reports suggest high-profile stars are also distancing themselves from the gala due to backlash over Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez being named honorary co-chairs, with a boycott of the Bezos Met Ball movement actively trending.

With Zendaya sitting this one out, the 2026 Met Gala is Law Roach's long-overdue solo debut. For a man who has spent over a decade making other people the main character, he is set to walk the carpet as his own client, in a confirmed look that is already turning heads: a custom white three-piece suit by Ami Paris, designed by Alexandre Mattiussi and hand-painted by Gabonese-Ghanaian artist Naïla Opiangah. The image architect is finally dressing himself, and this time, he is the one bringing the look to life on the carpet.
