Zendaya Reveals a “Heatstroke” Was Part of Her ‘Dune’ Survival Story

Zendaya has never been particularly interested in giving her characters the lazy nine-to-five treatment. From letting Rue’s emotional turmoil in Euphoria take a physical toll to memorizing Dune: Part Three lines during grueling shoots, the actor throws herself into the work before deliberately snapping back afterward. Apparently, even Arrakis could not convince her to take it easy.
While filming Dune, Zendaya revealed that her dedication came with an alarmingly literal dose of desert heat, leaving her with heatstroke.
Zendaya’s Dune heatstroke was anything but fabulously hot
Zendaya arrived on Dune fresh from Challengers, where she had trained intensely with her co-stars and was arguably in peak physical shape. Yet Arrakis had other plans. Speaking to W Magazine, Zendaya revealed that she suffered heatstroke while filming in Jordan after the restrictive still suit made her deliberately limit her water intake. The logic was painfully simple: the still suit was a bathroom nightmare, and hydration suddenly felt like a risky proposition.
“No, I thought I was being smart. So lesson learned.” The problem was not exactly the desert itself, but the still suit, which took at least 10 minutes to escape whenever nature called. Zendaya admitted she avoided drinking enough water because she feared needing the bathroom while trapped inside the elaborate costume, only for the strategy to backfire spectacularly.

The actor recalled eventually calling her mother from a bathroom floor because she felt terrible, prompting the very reasonable question of whether she had actually been drinking water. Speaking to W Magazine, Zendaya confessed that she had not, believing she had found a clever solution to the still-suit problem. Turns out, even a Fremen survival strategy needs hydration
While Zendaya agonized over the still-suit bathroom situation, her real dilemma seemed far less complicated than having more chemistry with Timothée Chalamet than with her husband, especially given how much thought goes into her fits.
Zendaya’s Dune fits were no casual sand walk
Zendaya’s Dune fits were never just desert-ready costumes thrown together for a sci-fi spectacle. Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan built Chani’s wardrobe like a survival system disguised as couture, with stillsuits containing over 100 custom pattern pieces, functional-looking details, and textures designed to disappear into Jordan’s rocky landscapes. Even the colors borrowed from the desert itself.

The fashion logic of Arrakis went far beyond looking cool while riding sandworms. Chani’s flowing wraps and gauzy layers were intentionally added to bring softness and romance to the harsh Fremen world, while her upgraded sandworm-riding suit included extra armor for protection. Basically, every stitch had a purpose, which explains why Zendaya’s Dune fits were as well prepared as her performances.
