Snake Plissken is gearing up for a long-awaited return, with Zack Snyder set to breathe new life into the iconic anti-hero. First released in 1981, Escape from New York, which inspired Metal Gear, has remained iconic even today. In the last few decades, the movie has been caught in remake talks, but every attempt ultimately hit a dead end.
Now, after decades of stalled plans, a remake is finally back on track. And this time, the dark dystopian thriller will likely get more gritty.

As reported by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder has been tapped to write and direct a reimagining of the cult classic Escape from New York. Known for his dark and highly stylized work in 300 and Watchmen, Snyder will now put his own spin on the crime-ridden dystopian United States shown in Escape from New York. As of now, there are not many details about the plot of the upcoming movie.
Snyder will also produce through Stone Quarry, alongside Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, with StudioCanal backing the project. One crucial executive producer attached to the film is John Carpenter, who wrote and directed the original movie. Set in the then-future year of 1997, Escape from New York follows decorated Special Forces veteran turned federal convict, Snake Plissken, who is sent on a mission to rescue the U.S. President from a dystopian Manhattan.
The film became a major box-office success, earning over $50 million worldwide against a modest $6 million budget. So, understandably, expectations are sky-high for Snyder's take on the character. But the eye-patch-wearing antihero is not the only action hero on the director's radar.
The director had once expressed his wish to reimagine another cult classic comic arc.
Zack Snyder wants to bring Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Zack Snyder has previously impressed with his work in the Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Zack Snyder's Justice League showed his distinct vision and filmmaking style. After these iconic movies, he has expressed interest in adapting Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. And that too in a style inspired by his 2009 movie, Watchmen.

Snyder made the comments during a 2021 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The director is known for bringing layered comic-book characters and intense action to life through dark, gritty storytelling. While a Batman: The Dark Knight Returns adaptation remains uncertain, Snyder’s take on Snake Plissken could reach the screen much sooner.
