Zack Snyder Fires Back at ‘Toxic’ Label, Defends Snyderverse Fans in Blunt Rant

For years, few fandoms have sparked as much debate as the one surrounding a certain gritty, slow-burning superhero universe. While some hail it as visionary filmmaking, others have branded its supporters with an unflattering label that refuses to fade away. But what happens when the filmmaker at the center of it all decides he has had enough?
In a recent podcast appearance, the director, Zack Snyder, did not hold back, and his comments are already reigniting conversations across the DC community.
So why is the debate around the Snyderverse still so heated years later?

Zack Snyder calls out the ‘toxic’ narrative surrounding his fans
The 59-year-old filmmaker appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, where he addressed the long-running criticism aimed at supporters of his DC vision. While reflecting on the uphill battle to release his version of Justice League, Snyder made it clear he has not forgotten who stood by him. Speaking about fans who are often branded as a little more enthusiastic than the norm, Snyder pushed back strongly.
“They catch a lot of flak for being toxic or whatever, but they literally saved human lives. You can go f--- yourselves if that’s what you think,” he said on the podcast, crediting fans for raising significant funds for suicide prevention causes.
His comments come years after the massive #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, which saw fans organize online campaigns, purchase billboards, trend hashtags globally, and even fund charitable initiatives to support the director’s original vision. The movement ultimately led to the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, a four-hour cut that many believed would never see the light of day.
But beyond the fiery defense, is there still hope for the Snyderverse to continue in some form?
Could the Zack Snyder story continue beyond the big screen?
During the conversation, Zack Snyder also hinted that he wouldn’t completely rule out revisiting his DC arc someday, even if not through traditional film. Reflecting on the years-long fight to bring Justice League to life in his original vision, he noted that there were “dark times” when it seemed impossible. Yet, against all odds, the project materialized.
At the same time, Zack Snyder showed no bitterness toward the new direction of DC Studios under James Gunn. He praised Gunn’s take on Superman, calling it “amazing” and emphasizing that the two visions are simply different creative paths. According to Zack Snyder, his trilogy has taken on “a life of its own,” separate from whatever comes next in the evolving DC landscape.
