In an interview with Empire, writer-director Zach Cregger gave a new update about his new Resident Evil reboot, which will have a scary vibe that he got inspired by the video game series. According to him, the action starts very early and continues right through until the end, making it feel like a long sequence in itself rather than separate scenes. Additionally, the pacing and set pieces came directly from the games.
“It feels like one gigantic sequence, things pop off about five minutes in, and it basically stays like that until the end. What I love about the games is that you move from set-piece to set-piece,” Cregger said to Empire, believing that the film will offer constant momentum through relentless action and horror, following the rhythm of the Resident Evil games.
Cregger further told Empire that the upcoming movie, which is scheduled to release on September 18, will mostly showcase his personal directorial style while remaining loyal to the Resident Evil universe. Using the games as an inspiration, he mentioned that the movie will tell the story about Bryan, an ordinary medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who lacks any skills in combat and has no experience in surviving, but nevertheless will have to go on an extremely dangerous journey.
While the reboot introduces a new protagonist, it remains rooted in the franchise's signature survival horror themes.
The Resident Evil franchise follows humanity's fight against bio-organic horrors
The Resident Evil story centers on a deadly viral outbreak caused by the Umbrella Corporation, a powerful pharmaceutical company secretly conducting illegal biological experiments. The virus continues to spread and turn people into zombies and grotesque mutant beings, as the survivors have to struggle for survival while also learning about the sinister dealings of the company. The protagonists from the game include Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and many others who have battled with more deadly bio-organic weapons in an attempt to prevent a global outbreak.

As the story progresses in the franchise, it not only includes events occurring in specific locations but also a global battle against bio-t********. With each entry in the franchise, there is always something new in the form of conspiracies, villains, and viruses. Horror, thriller, action, and mystery are just some of the genres involved in the Resident Evil franchise.
Meanwhile, Cregger's latest remarks hint that the soon-to-be-released remake of Resident Evil would be based on the horror survival foundation of the franchise, but at the same time would feature the director's unique filmmaking approach. With a new protagonist and a fresh creative direction, the reboot aims to introduce the iconic horror franchise to both longtime fans and a new generation of audiences. However, the story of viral infection, conspiracy theory, and constant struggle for survival remains the main reason why Resident Evil remains one of the most popular franchises in the horror genre.
