Apart from promotional runs for his latest release, Resident Evil, Zack Cregger is apparently also clearing the air on his involvement in the GLADYS prequel project. Following early developmental discussions that quietly began late last year, Warner Bros. has officially given the green light to GLADYS, the highly anticipated prequel to the hit horror thriller Weapons.

Locking in an official theatrical release date this past April, the studio is wasting no time expanding the chilling cinematic universe that captivated audiences and dominated box office conversations. But still, there are some conversions that need some fleshing out.

Like Zach Cregger’s actual role in the whole GLADYS project and what he will be primarily doing if he is not writing and directing.

Zach Cregger is elucidating his part in GLADYS, the Weapons prequel that was revealed shortly after the movie's August 2025 box office success. GLADYS was once said to be directed by Cregger. Then he left. Additionally, it appears that he is no longer co-writing the script with Zach Shields (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire). Cregger acknowledged in an interview with Deadline that he is not writing GLADYS anymore.

“Oh, actually, Zach Shields is writing GLADYS. I was developing the story with him, but he’s writing it,” Cregger shared.

Warner Bros. has not revealed the director, but it will not be Cregger, especially given the Steven Spielberg-produced The Flood, his immediate next project after Resident Evil, releases a month earlier. While things remain unclear on who will eventually helm GLADYS, an obvious name that comes to mind is Shields. He is already developing the story, so why not direct it as well? 

GLADYS is obviously not Cregger's primary priority at this point. He has a lot of projects he wants to direct, but it appears that he is gradually moving away from it, given his recent remarks to Deadline about not wanting to make any more franchise movies after Resident Evil. Therefore, it makes sense to give the full reins of the project to Shields.

Cregger recently held a screening of Resident Evil for the media where he previewed a small part of the movie for first reactions.

In order to keep the surprises he has in store a secret, Zach Cregger only gave the media a brief 30-minute preview of his most recent film. But from what they saw in that 30-minute footage, Cregger might have produced his best work yet. Even though it has the trappings of popular video game IP, he believes that Resident Evil is just as original as his previous movies. It is a highly captivating story about a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, one of the stars of Weapons.

Chaos breaks out as the courier encounters the dreaded T-virus from the Umbrella Corporation while driving through the icy darkness one night. With a lean and vicious 95 minutes, Cregger claims that the creative challenge for Resident Evil was to "floor it at minute six and not take my foot off the gas," plunging the audience into hell. While the filmmaker might not be actively involved with GLADYS, we know he is busy creating spectacles for his fans.
