Before Robin Williams became one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedic forces, Morgan Fairchild had already caught a glimpse of the genius hiding behind the chaos. Years before his name became synonymous with improvisation, Fairchild found herself opposite the comedian in one of television’s most unforgettable comedies. What happened during their first scenes together left her with a story that perfectly captured the magic Williams brought into every room.

And somewhere between the script, the improvisation, and Williams doing what only Williams could do, Fairchild found herself on the receiving end of a moment she would never forget.

Morgan Fairchild recalls a heartwarming Robin Williams moment

Speaking exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, Morgan Fairchild recalled the moment Robin Williams realized she could keep up with his unpredictable improvisation on Mork & Mindy. During a rehearsal for her first episode, the two began bouncing lines and ideas off each other, with Williams going completely off-script as Fairchild matched his energy. Their back-and-forth eventually sent Williams into a delighted frenzy, prompting him to grab her by the waist and lift her into the air.

" ...and we’re going back and forth doing things back, back, back, back, back. And finally he grabs me by the waist and like pushes me in the air and says, ‘Mama, you’re one of me.’ So we had so much fun, and we would do just improvisational stuff all the time.” Fairchild told Entertainment Weekly.

The recent Entertainment Weekly revelation came after Fairchild had already been captivated by Williams’ talent while watching him make his breakout appearance on Happy Days. She was so convinced he was a genius that she told her agent she would work on Mork & Mindy for free, even though she was initially advised to turn down the recurring role. Once she joined the show, Fairchild quickly became one of the performers who could follow Williams wherever his improvisation took him, and the two continued creating spontaneous moments throughout her appearances.

But that unexpected connection was only the beginning of Fairchild’s Mork & Mindy story, because behind the scenes, another opportunity was quietly waiting for her.

Morgan Fairchild almost became a regular on Mork & Mindy

Morgan Fairchild went on to reprise Susan Taylor, Mindy’s friend who attempts to seduce Mork, in two more episodes during the first season of Mork & Mindy. Her chemistry with Williams did not go unnoticed, and when Fairchild later crossed paths with creator Garry Marshall at a New York up-fronts event, he told her that the show planned to give her a contract because she was the only actress who knew how to work with Williams. The timing, however, could not have been worse.

By then, Fairchild had already landed Flamingo Road, the series that would become her own major television breakthrough. The show premiered in 1980 and eventually earned her a Golden Globe nomination, turning what could have been a longer run alongside Williams into a brief but unforgettable chapter. Decades later, Fairchild still remembers Williams with enormous affection, describing him as a kind and gentle spirit and insisting that every wonderful thing people ever heard about him was true.

“Just kindest, gentle spirit, wonderful guy,” Fairchild added, speaking further to Entertainment Weekly.

And from their spontaneous back-and-forth to the unexpected “You’re one of me” that followed, it was the kind of unscripted Hollywood magic that could never have been written into the script.
