Ke Huy Quan revealed that a respected actor mocked his signature silly face right before his Best Supporting Actor win for Everything Everywhere All at Once. He had asked the actor for a photograph, struck his usual playful pose, and expected nothing but warmth in return.

"You're not going to win tonight with that stupid face," a line Quan recorded word for word in his memoir Never Say Die.

Later, after his win, Quan reflected on the moment and told himself, "I’d won with that stupid face. I wasn’t going to let someone else’s comment touch that night."  

According to Entertainment Weekly, Quan admitted in his memoir that the exchange was not loud and nobody around them seemed to notice anything unusual. He spotted the same actor seated a few tables away as the ceremony continued, and he tried to shake off the odd exchange. When his category was finally called, Quan stood in disbelief and walked to the stage to accept his award, letting the achievement outweigh the discomfort of the moment entirely.
