In the early episodes of Young Sherlock, the Holmes-Moriarty duo appears almost inseparable, two brilliant minds chasing a dangerous conspiracy side by side. But the story takes a dark turn amid the chaos of revolutionary Paris, where, during a frantic escape in Episode 7, The Case of the Two Corners, James Moriarty instinctively kills a soldier rushing toward him and Princess Gulun Shou’an. The moment sends a shock across the screen, delivering one of Young Sherlock’s biggest twists as Moriarty, once Holmes’ brilliant ally, begins transforming into the very enemy destined to define the detective’s future.

Reflecting on their complex bond, showrunner Matthew Parkhill said in an interview that Sherlock and Moriarty are just like two sides of the same coin, highlighting how both outsiders recognise the brilliance in each other long before their paths ultimately diverge.

“I always think that they’re very much two sides of the same coin.” Parkhill said to Variety.

However, as Holmes continues uncovering deeper secrets behind the conspiracy, the finale, The Case of Beatrice Holmes, leaves him and James Moriarty still strangely connected, yet unmistakably drifting toward a future rivalry. Directed by Guy Ritchie and developed by Peter Harness, the dynamic quickly caught viewers’ attention, earning the series an impressive 82% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes while fuelling massive online buzz among fans.
