Randy Quaid has publicly slammed Anne Hathaway's casting in the upcoming Days of Thunder sequel, insisting Tom Cruise needed Nicole Kidman back instead of a new leading lady. The racing franchise, once defined by the chemistry between Cruise and Kidman, is now stepping into unfamiliar territory with a different co-star altogether. Quaid, who appeared in the 1990 original, clearly has strong opinions on how the sequel should honor its roots, and he made those opinions loud and public.
While Cruise gears up for a new pairing on the racetrack, Quaid is busy campaigning for the one he never stopped believing in.
Randy Quaid slams Anne Hathaway ahead of Days of Thunder 2
Randy Quaid did not hold back when reacting to Anne Hathaway joining Days of Thunder 2, branding her a horrible choice for the racing sequel. He believes the film needs its original leading lady to return, arguing that chemistry and legacy outweigh a fresh face. Quaid took to social media over the weekend to make his stance impossible to ignore.
"We need Nicole back. Don't be a p****, @TomCruise" he said on his X handle.
He then added, "You need the original girl. It's not personal; it's filmmaking," emphasizing that the casting choice, in his view, could shape the sequel's connection to its predecessor.

Beyond the first jab, Quaid did not stop there and used a follow-up post on X to expand his argument further. He labeled Hathaway a leftist and woke, suggesting she does not fit the NASCAR audience the franchise has traditionally drawn, which he described as largely conservative. Quaid also compared the situation to the making of the original film, recalling how editors worked around the clock to meet a rushed release, and hinted the current production feels similarly hurried, almost set up to stumble.
While Quaid campaigns for a reunion that may never happen, both Cruise and Hathaway are already juggling packed slates that stretch well beyond this one sequel.
Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway juggle busy schedules beyond Days of Thunder
Tom Cruise, alongside the Days of Thunder sequel, currently has several other projects moving through various stages of production. Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, is set for an October 2026 release, while Top Gun 3 remains in early writing stages at Paramount. Broadsword, a World W** II drama with Christopher McQuarrie, and The Gauntlet, a reimagining of a 1977 action thriller, sit in pre-production, alongside the supernatural thriller Deeper with Doug Liman.

Anne Hathaway is equally occupied, with The End of Oak Street and the psychological thriller Verity both releasing later this year, alongside the true crime series Fear Not. The Princess Diaries 3, the military drama Alone at Dawn, and the romantic fantasy Forever round out her expanding lineup. With both actors managing such demanding schedules, Randy Quaid's wish for Nicole Kidman's return appears increasingly unlikely to materialize.
