James McAvoy is shedding some light on the not-so-often-talked-about price of fame and success in Hollywood. Stepping behind the camera for his directorial debut with California Schemin', James McAvoy is bringing more than just a fresh creative vision to the director's chair - he is bringing three decades of hard-earned industry wisdom.

While navigating the transition from blockbuster star to filmmaker, the veteran actor has been candid about the realities of building a career in the arts. Drawing from a long tenure in the spotlight, McAvoy is pulling back the curtain on the invisible trade-offs of ambition.

James McAvoy on the brutal price of success

Looking back on thirty years in the business, James McAvoy has a pretty clear-eyed view of what it really takes to make it in the arts. In an interview with Sharp Magazine, the Split actor talked about his directorial debut, California Schemin’, but in doing so, he ventured into the aspects of the industry that tried to typecast him and put systemic barriers in his creative ambition.

“Anybody trying to make it in the business, you have to sacrifice,” said McAvoy.

As McAvoy points out, breaking into the industry eats up your entire life. On has to trade away their time, burn through their energy, wake up before dawn, and watch personal relationships drift away because the hours are just relentless. But the real cost goes way beyond missed dinners and a lack of sleep.

To keep climbing, people often end up compromising the things that matter most - their peace of mind, their core values, and who they actually are. In the end, McAvoy told Sharp Magazine that every sacrifice comes due, and when artists run out of emotional fuel to cover the cost, that is when burnout and heartbreak happen.

Even after making a name for himself for over thirty years, even McAvoy, who has just signed Armando Iannucci's new thriller, is not immune to the double standards of the industry.

James McAvoy’s difficult shift to the director’s chair

When established screen stars make the leap to directing, Hollywood loves to slap a neat little label on them. Having spent more than three decades headlining everything from gritty indie features like Filth and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby to high-budget comic book franchises like X-Men and Split, James McAvoy recently encountered a bizarre double standard as he moved behind the camera. Suddenly, every script sliding across his desk was aggressively Scottish, a pigeonholing habit the Glasgow-born talent found equal parts comical and telling.

“Then when I said I wanted to direct, everything I got was just Scottish movies, Scottish movies, Scottish movies,” revealed the actor to Sharp Magazine.

RELEASE DATE: May 27, 2016 TITLE: X-Men: Apocalypse STUDIO: Twentieth Century Fox Films DIRECTOR: Bryan Singer PLOT: With the emergence of the world s first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan STARRING: James Mcavoy Montreal Canada - ZUMAg90_ 20160527_shr_g90_583

Reflecting on the sudden shift, McAvoy points out the sheer mathematical disconnect: across a 32-year acting career, he has only played a Scottish character roughly half a dozen times and starred in a mere handful of local productions. This reveals a peculiar irony, considering how rarely studios actually fund homegrown projects that allow Scottish actors to use their native identity in the first place.
