Dakota Fanning learned one of her most lasting acting lessons when she was only seven years old, while working alongside Sean Penn in I Am Sam. Years later, the actor still remembers the advice that changed the way she approached scenes and understood the importance of reacting naturally. The lesson came from a film that marked a major turning point in Fanning’s childhood career.

Now, as she reflects on her experiences with both structured and improvisational filmmaking, she reveals why something Penn taught her decades ago has stayed with her.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Dakota Fanning recalled how much Penn improvised while filming I Am Sam. Rather than simply relying on memorized dialogue, she learned that actors need to remain engaged with what is actually happening around them. She explained that knowing the script is important, but an actor should also be willing to respond naturally when a scene does not unfold exactly as planned.

“You have to still be present in the moment if somebody asks you, is it raining? And you are, you know it’s written that it was supposed to be raining but now it’s not raining, you have to remember that,” Fanning said.

For the young actor, it was a powerful introduction to the difference between simply delivering lines and genuinely experiencing a scene. She described it in Happy Sad Confused podcast as getting “a blast of that lesson at… seven,” adding that she has carried the principle with her throughout her career. For Fanning, that distinction became one of the earliest and most valuable lessons of her career. Even decades later, she continues to draw on the experience when working on projects that leave room for spontaneity and improvisation.

That early experience also connects to another milestone that Fanning is now approaching with her sister.

The Fanning sisters are set to appear together on screen for the first time in the historical drama The Nightingale. Dakota Fanning previously revealed that she and Elle Fanning are “super excited” to finally work together, with production set to take place in Europe.  The long-awaited collaboration is especially significant because the sisters previously shared I Am Sam, but never appeared together in the same scene. Now, The Nightingale will finally give them the opportunity to explore their on-screen chemistry as sisters.

The project is particularly meaningful because the sisters technically appeared in I Am Sam as different ages of the same character, Lucy. However, they never shared a scene. The Nightingale, directed by Michael Morris and based on Kristin Hannah’s novel, will finally bring them together professionally. The film is scheduled for a February 12, 2027 theatrical release in the U.S. and U.K.

From learning to stay present on the set of I Am Sam to embracing different filmmaking styles today, Fanning’s early experience with Penn appears to have left a lasting mark. It is a lesson that can be especially valuable when an actor moves between tightly scripted productions and more improvisational projects.
