Hollywood may hand out trophies for great performances, but if roasting were an award category, Anthony Mackie might already have his acceptance speech ready. In a resurfaced clip making the rounds again, the Marvel star shows absolutely no love for Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, brutally shutting down an interviewer’s movie taste with a savage, “You have awful taste.” And somehow, that was not even the end of the roast.

One Superman opinion was all it took for the interview to go completely off the rails, and Mackie certainly did not come armed with Kryptonite-free diplomacy.

While talking to Collider's Steven Weintraub during an interview in 2015, Anthony Mackie found himself discussing superhero movies when the interviewer revealed that he liked Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. Mackie wasted no time delivering his verdict, firing back, "You're bananas." Weintraub continued telling him how he can watch it on loop, to which Mackie went, saying, “It scares me that you are reviewing movies.” Weintraub then said that he does not review movies anymore, to which Mackie said how it's good to know, as they all are now saved.

When Weintraub went on to tell Mackie how he loves Marvel movies and how he loved Captain America: Civil War, Mackie was clearly having none of it, turning a simple movie opinion into a full-blown roast session.

"Don't say it's good. Don't. Because that means if you say it's good, that means it's awful. You have awful taste," Mackie said to Weintraub.

The exchange has resurfaced years later, giving superhero fans another reason to revisit one of the genre’s most divisive movies. Directed by Zack Snyder, Man of Steel arrived in 2013 with Henry Cavill as Superman and launched the DC Extended Universe, but its darker tone and destructive final battle divided viewers from the start. The film still became a major box-office success, earning around $670 million worldwide, proving that Mackie’s brutal verdict certainly was not shared by everyone.

'Supergirl' vs. 'Superman' Box Office Gap: What Led to the Divide Between DC’s Biggest Releases?

While Henry Cavill flew away from Man of Steel far earlier than many fans wanted, Superman has found an entirely new flight path across the 2026 slate.

Superman’s new DC universe is already flying higher

The direct road from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel may have ended, but the Superman universe has wasted no time starting over under James Gunn’s new DCU. Following the success of David Corenswet’s Superman, the franchise expanded with Supergirl, which hit theaters on June 26, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie and inspired by the Woman of Tomorrow comic run, the film sends Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El on a darker interstellar journey alongside Krypto, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing Krem of the Yellow Hills.

The wider DCU is also growing beyond the Kryptonian family. HBO’s eight-episode Lanterns series, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, is set to premiere on August 16, 2026, while the next Superman chapter is already taking shape. Superman: Man of Tomorrow began filming in April 2026 ahead of its July 9, 2027, release, with James Gunn teasing a story that forces Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor into an uneasy alliance against the cosmic threat Brainiac.

While Anthony Mackie may think liking Man of Steel should disqualify someone from reviewing movies, but the $670 million box office says at least a few people survived the alleged “awful taste.”
