Ethan Frome was supposed to be a story of forbidden passion, not a backstage recipe for a Hollywood brawl. Liam Neeson drew audiences into the 1993 romantic drama with his quiet, heartbreaking performance, but Harvey Weinstein apparently had other ideas. Veteran marketer Gerry Rich recalls that Weinstein secretly recut the film and screened his version, prompting a furious clash with Neeson that nearly ended in fists.

What followed was no discreet industry squabble: the confrontation spilled into public view, with Rich playing referee as the actor and producer came close to blows.

Gerry Rich recalls Harevy Weinstein and Liam Neeson's near fistfight

In his new book, Chasing Hollywood: A Marketing Chief’s Lessons on Breaking Through, former Miramax executive Gerry Rich recounts a screening of Ethan Frome that nearly descended into a fistfight. According to Rich, Harvey Weinstein secretly recut the 1993 romantic drama without informing its star and producer, Liam Neeson, or director John Madden. Neeson made his displeasure unmistakable once the screening ended.

“I felt like a teacher on a playground, rushing in to physically break these boys up before it turned into a full-blown fistfight,” Rich recalled, adding that in the end Weinstein yelled back a threat, "You don't want to fight me."

The former marketing executive found himself intervening as the furious exchange moved into the theater vestibule. What began as an argument over the film’s new cut had become a face-to-face confrontation, with neither man backing down.

“That man butchered my movie,”  Neeson declared.

Weinstein shot back that he had saved it, before the argument turned personal. When Neeson warned that the producer did not want to fight him, Weinstein allegedly challenged him to proceed, going “chest to chest” with the actor and declaring, “I do what I want. I am a millionaire!”

Liam Neeson and Harvey Weinstein came close to recreating Bill Murray and Chevy Chase’s infamous 1978 SNL altercation, but later buried the hatchet.

How Harvey Weinstein and Lian Neeson mended their relationship

A bouquet of flowers proved more useful than another round of arguments when Liam Neeson and Harvey Weinstein moved past their heated Ethan Frome showdown. According to Gerry Rich, Weinstein sent the actor a floral peace offering after their confrontation. The gesture helped ease tensions following their explosive disagreement over the film’s secret re-edit.

The flowers were only part of the resolution, however, as Weinstein also agreed to shelve his re-cut and release the original version championed by Neeson and director John Madden. That creative concession helped the two sides move forward without allowing the dispute to derail the film’s release. In the end, a bouquet and a change of course helped Neeson and Weinstein put their clash behind them.
