The Fast and the Furious, which debuted in 2001 as a street-racing crime thriller starring Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as undercover cop Brian O’Conner, became one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises. The movie was a surprise hit at the box office, and soon Universal Pictures began to think about turning it into a franchise. However, Diesel did not return for the 2003 sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, with Walker heading the film with a new cast. 

Years later, in 2017, Diesel opened up about the decision behind his exit. 

While talking to Clique TV in 2017, Vin Diesel revealed he turned down more than $20 million to reprise his role in 2 Fast 2 Furious, as he felt that a sequel to The Fast and the Furious would be a creative error. Reflecting on the decision, the actor said that he advised Universal against making an immediate follow-up because he feared it would damage the original film’s legacy. 

“I said, ‘No. You can't do a sequel to the first one,’ because I was thinking in an idealistic sense about film,” Diesel said, explaining why he decided to walk away from the lucrative offer. 

Diesel further said that to Clique TV that he wanted the original film to stand on its own, rather than be watered down by a rushed sequel. He remembered telling his father that he turned down the multimillion-dollar offer. Diesel added that later on, the move was respected by Snoop Dogg, who thanked him for showing that some decisions are made out of conviction and not out of money.

Although he skipped the sequel, Diesel's story with the franchise was not over. 

Vin Diesel, who is now all set for the last Fast & Furious movie, stayed away from the franchise's main storyline for years after passing on 2 Fast 2 Furious. However, he made a brief cameo at the end of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), setting up his return. He then made his official return for Fast & Furious (2009), reuniting with Paul Walker and the original cast. His return was crucial in transforming the franchise into a global box-office giant. 

Vin Diesel’s previous confession shows how much he valued creative integrity at a crucial time in his career. He rejected a multi-million dollar offer to leave the franchise's first sequel, but his eventual return helped turn the series into a global phenomenon. In hindsight, Diesel does not appear to regret his decision, seeing it as one consistent with his long-term vision for the franchise, and not a play for short-term financial gain.
