While Tony Leung Chiu-wai effortlessly transitioned into his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the actor took one issue with Marvel Studios’ process. During filming, Leung revealed there was very little room for improvisation because of the studio’s strict approach of no changes to scenes and dialogue. Although he spoke highly of the efficiency of the production house, the actor did not appear impressed by the limited creative flow on set.
Looking back on his experience filming the movie, Leung even recalled an incident where he got into a creative clash with director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Tony Leung raved about the scale of production and professionalism on set for the Marvel movie. But while discussing improvisation in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he explained that he spoke to director Destin Daniel Cretton about the action scenes, suggesting they should involve mixed martial arts for a character who had lived for over a thousand years, rather than relying on a more 1970s-style approach. However, the director reportedly had to refuse his suggestion.
“And the director said no. I said, “Why not? Why just typical kung fu in the ’70s?” He said, “This is Marvel.” I said, “Okay,” and I didn’t argue anymore,” he told Vulture.
Now, while there were disagreements, Leung ultimately showed a brilliant version of the character. In his previous interviews, he explained that he saw Wenwu as a human rather than a villain. He focused on the character’s past trauma, pain, and heartbreak to understand why Wenwu becomes the person he is.
And although the director’s choices may have limited changes to the action scenes, Destin Daniel Cretton helped him shape the emotional core of the character.
Tony Leung opened up about the romantic aspect of Wenwu
Tony Leung, who played Wenwu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, revealed that director Destin Daniel Cretton’s one question to him about his kids helped him find the right approach to playing the character. He believes that the confusion in his response about how to love his children was the emotional dynamic between Wenwu and his kids in the film. The Silent Friend actor opened up about the incident during his interview with Vulture.
“I remember one day the director suddenly asked me a question when I just passed by: “Do you love your kids?” I said, “Yes, but I don’t know how.” So that’s the relationship between me and my kids in the film.

He added that his character in the movie is trapped in the past, consumed by his longing for his wife. That pain does not allow him to think about anything else. This understanding helped the actor to create one of the MCU’s most emotionally nuanced and arguably best villains.
