X-Men ‘97 just finished its first season on Disney+. While there are many factors that have fans scratching their heads in confusion, wondering where the next season will go, one specific subject of speculation has been the introduction of non-binary representation in the X-Men franchise. A new and unexpected romance of Wolverine might have been teased during Marvel Studios' X-Men '97. And fans were not entirely convinced until the confirmation came from an X-Men writer themselves. 

Beau DeMayo, an X-Men writer, confirmed in an X post that "Yes, Morph was confessing romantic feelings for Logan #xmen97.” Up until now, Morph and Wolverine were shown as nothing more than close friends. However, in X-Men '97 episode 3, viewers got a glimpse of a possible romantic connection between them. In one scene, Morph saw Wolverine in the shower during a vision. Instead of being shocked, Morph made a playful comment about helping with the “hard-to-reach places”. 

Morph's response at that moment could be interpreted as a subtle indication of his romantic feelings for Wolverine. Fans have seen Wolverine grieving over Morph's apparent demise and noticed how the duo shared constant banter. However, despite their close relationship, there had been no prior hints of romance between them. Plus, Wolverine's heart belongs to Jean Grey, so it is unlikely he would feel the same way about Morph.

This angle, nonetheless, could provide an interesting narrative avenue, especially considering fans' reactions to Beau DeMayo's take on the ongoing speculations.

Non-binary representation has been notably missing from the mainstream media. And this in particular makes the exploration of this new characterization by a beloved X-Men character all the more crucial. After Beau DeMayo's revelation, fans took to social media to share how they already saw it coming but were hesitant to draw a firm conclusion. They pointed out several scenes involving Morph and Wolverine, which now seem to have started making more sense to fans. 

Many fans were thrilled to see this new dynamic taking root in the franchise.

There were also some observations that Wolverine's sexuality was never explicitly straight, so this update did not come as a shock to many.

It is fair to say that the majority of fans are on board with this creative decision. But with Deadpool & Wolverine just around the corner and considering that X-Men '97 will somehow link to it, it will be intriguing to see how this new dynamic with Wolverine will impact Deadpool's world.
